These workshop-based courses give participants ages 9-13 hands-on experience in a variety of topics related to the world of filmmaking and digital media.

BECOMING A STORYTELLER:

SATURDAYS   October 20 + 27

This course will cover all the fundamental elements of storytelling to teach participants how to write a movie script.

Topics include:

– Finding Your Story (Stories) in Your Everyday Life

– A Study of Emotions and How to Express Emotions in a Story

THE ART OF MOVIE EDITING

SUNDAYS    October 21+28

This course will familiarize participants with a variety of editing styles and techniques, while giving them hands-on experience using professional editing software.

Topics Include:

  • Using Final Cut Pro X
  • Editing styles
  • How to connect shots in a smooth and professional way
  • Colour Correction
  • Simple Post-Production Effects

 

CINEMATOGRAPHY AND VISUAL STORYTELLING

SATURDAYS   November 3+10

Cinematography is more than just making movies look pretty—it’s about telling a story using a visual language! Learn to “speak” that language through the lens!

Topics Include:

  • Learning to use a DSLR camera
  • ISO, shutter speed, frame rate, exposure, focus, white balance
  • Using lenses
  • How different shot types and angles influence how we feel
  • Cinema Lighting

ACTING FOR THE SCREEN

For movie stars in training, this crash course will walk participants through an actor’s process and help them develop the skills they need to make it big!

Topics include:

  • Walking, posture, and body language
  • Finding your character’s voice
  • Creating a backstory for your character
  • Finding the subtext in the dialogue
  • Screen acting VS stage acting

 

CREATING MOVIE SOUNDTRACKS

SATURDAYS   November 17+24

One of the most overlooked but essential parts of the movie-watching experience: sound plays a huge role in how we FEEL the movie. Learn how to build an engaging soundtrack using effects, foley, and music.

Topics Include:

  • Creating Atmosphere
  • Tips for sound recording
  • Layering effects
  • Creating supernatural sound effects
  • Making Movie Music

 

DIGITAL SET DESIGN LAB

SUNDAYS November 18 +25

Learn the fundamentals of production design and set decoration by applying it to a digital model of a film set that YOU create on the computer.

Topics Include:

  • Choosing a Colour Scheme
  • How to use props, set design, costumes, hair, and makeup to tell the story
  • Creating an overall “look” for a film
  • Using architectural modeling software for film

 

THE YOUNG MOVIE DIRECTOR’S WORKSHOP

SATURDAYS   December 1+8:

Do you want to be the next Steven Spielberg? Do you have what it takes to be a movie director? What does a director even do? All these questions and more will be answered in this course!

Topics include:

  • Breaking down a script like a director
  • Directing Styles
  • Blocking
  • DOs and DON’TS of working with actors
  • Casting the right actors

 

PAINTING WITH LIGHT: A PHOTOGRAPHY CRASH COURSE

SUNDAYS    December 2+9:

The best way to learn photography? Take photos!! Learn how to capture every moment using technology and artistic principles while using one of our cameras—or bring your own!

Topics include:

  • Using a DSLR Camera
  • ISO, shutter speed, frame rate, exposure, focus, white balance
  • Using lenses
  • Composition
  • Analyzing photography as art, storytelling, journalism, and more
  • Portrait Photography
  • Basic Photoshop
